WEDNESDAY ENGLISH POLICY

Recently, the government of NTT has settled a policy governing the utilization of English. The policy to use English as a communication tool in the society. It’s a good idea. Maybe from government’s side they see that NTT has become an attractive tourism destination.

Yes, obviously. NTT has already become an attractive tourism destination. We have many beautiful beaches, mountains and falls. We also have many objects to be explored. Not only natural objects, but cultural ones.

So, they release a rule regarding the usage of English to be implemented in NTT. All people are to push to use it anywhere, anytime, anyhow. They are trying to help the people of NTT. Not only to be a good host to introduce NTT in many aspects but also to make them bounder less.

It’s just like the statement of Ludwig Wittgenstein, the philosopher: “Die grenzen miner sprache bedeuten die grenzen miner welt.” Means, the boundary of my word is the end of my world. It simply means, they can only be able to communicate with those who understand the words they are saying.

To make the people bounder less by mastering English, the government has appointed Wednesday as the English day. It means that every person in NTT should use English to communicate with others once in a week. Whatever they are as well as their level of understanding is.

On behalf of NTT community, we are proud of that policy. For English nowadays has become a worldwide language. So, if the people are fluently speaking English means they can understand the culture and customs of many countries. By that thing, they enrich and enlarge their knowledge as well as their friendship.

However, it’s not as easy as we think. To settle a rule and to implement it is a different case. To create and settle a rule needs only some people who are at the same level of understanding. While, to implement it we need to move and/or encourage all people. Encourage the people from all around the region.  Encourage the people who are not having the same level in many aspects. There are some obstacles that we should pay attention to.

The obstacles are: the range of understanding of the people is too wide. There are various needs and desires. The people do not know the aim and the benefit of using English, etc. These obstacles make the English speaking implementation ineffective. Shortly, we can say that the Wednesday English Policy is insignificant.

How then? It will be a wise and powerful example to start it from the bottom up to the top leaders all over NTT. It should be started in their group or communities or institutions. And also from those whose major is English to always doing it. It is as an encouragement for others surroundings that English is fun.

This will affect as well as motivate other people to do the same thing. That is practicing English speaking around the society where ever they are. And by that effect, day by day, English speaking will be a cheerful habit and need as well.

So, finally, English will become a second language for the people all over NTT even to the uneducated ones. Hopefully someday it happens!
